Doris Howe, my aunt, was a tall, stately-looking woman with a gentle, kindly personality that everyone liked and respected. Like my mother, she wrote and had many books published, among them titles such as ‘Winter Jasmine’, ‘Island Destiny ‘ and ‘Somewhere My Love’; like my mother’s novels, these all had strong plots and clear characterisation
Good classic writing. These books will be edited and republished by R.M. Howe in due course.
My aunt and my mother were chalk and cheese, but the family bond was tight. They were best friends, helping each other in all matters, not least of which was when either of them got stuck with a book or plot: the other would always find a way to take things forward.
Both writers based their novels on places they knew and loved – often Canada and the Lake District – so there is always a sense of reality in their writing. Although Doris never married, she had the imagination to assess relationships, and Romance was certainly a favourite theme.
