The Adventure in Spain Ends for the Author of Azalea and I

It looks like the fascinating experiences in Spain for Roberta, our author, are coming to an end. In this blog we hear about her becoming an organic plant and herb saleswoman and her unexpected end to her time in Spain….for now! Guaranteed – The Adventure in Spain Ends for the Author of Azalea and I will not be the last we hear of Roberta’s adventures that have influenced her writing and life…

“The Plants — they did grow. And grow and grow.

The research paid off. The feeding and watering were a chore, but it had to be done. It was so much better than breeding poor bunnies. Things were looking up.

Organic herbs and all manner of plants went down really well with quite a lot of local restaurants, especially ex pat ones with reputations to uphold.

I got the job of door to door plant selling. This did make me use the Spanish language a bit more! When you are surrounded by ex-pats and many of the Spanish spoke English because it was good for business, it was too easy to be lazy. I could always fudge my way through.

However, landing on a doorstep armed with bunches of green foliage, you must be able to explain. Costs, how often they want deliveries and why they would want organic produce at all!! Also, how fast could we grow produce to keep up with demand. Good question. We never did find out as after one good season with the organic plants, my Spanish adventure came to an unexpected end.

I didn’t know this when I went back to England for a Christmas break though. Neither did my friend. How quickly things can change. I left my car and clothes in a small house I was renting never thinking I wasn’t going back.

This is a story in itself. It took two years and several holidays to sort out. I had been in Spain for two years and was very happy with the lifestyle. Siestas on the beach had become a routine. Going to bodegas and Spanish bars (as opposed to ex pat bars) in an evening had become a way of life. And I hope will be one day again.”
